How are you using TTG galleries?

Roll call!!

Since April, I’ve released something like 20 web gallery templates for Lightroom. I’ve received a tremendous response from users – complements, feature requests, bug reports, complaints and more – and it’s been a good feeling to find so many Lightroom users appreciating and making use of my work.

Most of what I see, though, are sites in mid-development, usually when I’m resolving support issues.

Some users use the galleries pretty much as they are, while others hack them up a bit to personalize them or to integrate them into existing web designs.

I’m interested in seeing examples of how Lightroom users are deploying TTG galleries in “completed” websites. So, my question is, how are YOU using these galleries?

If you have a site deploying one or more TTG galleries, please post a comment below with a link to your site, and listing any galleries you’re using. If you’ve made modifications, please feel free to list those as well. I’d really like to see what folks have come up with.

And, who knows? It may give me some new ideas for development.

For my band’s web page I am using a modified version of an Autoviewer gallery: http://antinymmusic.com/photoflash/index.php

For my portfolio page I use a hacked up version of the Slimbox gallery: http://www.ink13.com/print_design/index.html

I love all of the TTG galleries. I only wish I had more sites that needed them. I keep trying to get my photographer friends to let me build pages of them.

Hi, I am using your TTG Shadowbox template together with XML Auto Index on my site http://www.racemat.de/ to show some photos I’ve taken in zoos. Just go to “Fotoalben” – but be warned nothing special there ;-)

Thanks your all your hard work!

FWIW, I love the “remove live_update.js” feature in TTG Shadowbox v249 and think it would be fantastic if you added a similar feature to remove the “index.html” file and “thumbnail” folder from TTG Auto Index.

Believe me, I wish I could. Unfortunately, the architecture doesn’t work that way.

Hi Matt,
As you know I’ve included some new TTG Shadowbox Galleries into my existing website which is at: www.johnbishop.me.uk

Follow the Show Photos link on the left, then select from these shows:
Roberto Devereux,
Bluebeard,
Pimpinone,
Semele,
Un Giorno di Regno,
Fierrabras

The other links on that page link to older Frontpage galleries which I will convert to Shadowbox Galleries as time allows.

I will eventually change the Show Photos page to a TTG AutoIndex Gallery when I have made a few more galleries and when I have learnt how to do it!

all the best,

John

Hi Matthew,
Again, thanks for all the incredible offerings. I’m still quite the newbie to this stuff and your templates have really helped to tie my hacky pages together :)

I had some spare time today, so I began overhauling my pages. I’m trying to keep it simple but more will be added I’m sure. For now the core is finished.

What’s not keeping my page simple is iWeb – yikes – don’t like it, but it’s an easier alternative for now. I ended up using an iframe to display the slimbox galleries. This seems to work in the PC/MAC browsers I’ve tried, but it’s a bit slow and has introduced a few compromises.

So much more to learn. :)

Anyhoo, have a look.

Dan, I’m not typically a fan of the iframe, but your site looks great. I was surprised at how well you’ve managed to embed the galleries in the iframes.

I use a hacked up version of TTG Shadowbox in conjunction with the XML auto index. I originally hacked the gallery code to make menu items before you implemented the ability to add menu items in lightroom. The rest of my hacks are simple changes to the CSS to change the placement of text or size of different elements or adding background images.

www.kemg.org
I use slimbox in places and I think I used the album index also… its kinda ragtag in places and I need to redo it and tidy everything up with what I have learned playing with the code on the other web page.

oh!!
and the model pages use the autoviewer!

I love what you do!!!!
THANK YOU LARGE!

I’ve pretty much rebuilt my site around your Shadowbox template and really think It’s given me a nice looking site that easy to update and easy to use.
Really love the new LRPages template and currently playing with that to see how I can integrate it.
Fantastic, thanks so much!

I did another thing with your templates.
I took the code from the auto index and modified it to load a random image onto my main page

goto www.bhphotoworld.net

reload the page a few times and watch the image change =)

thanks again for your great ideas!!

Nice work, Mike, though I could have saved you some trouble and just given you a simple image rotation script that I’ve had sitting around for at least two years. ;P

its ok
I got to learn alot by hacking the codes =)

that was the reason I did it to begin with

I have found lots of scritps like that but I am so much more familer with the css and the php code now its amazing!!

Hi Matthew,

I’ve gone online with TTG Auto Index and TTG Slimbox at:

www.tanzschule-reiners.de/index.php

It’s in German, but choosing “Fotos” in the main menu brings yout to the galleries. Using the Auto Index gives me the needed flexibility and a very fast way to publish my fotos. It’s the hompeage of a dance club run by a friend of mine and the short return time is a key factor. The ladies there want to go through their performance – return home and see the pictures!
Being able to do all of this from Lightroom now is such a great step forward. And it’s all possible now, because of your work. Thanks, and the donation is on it’s way.

Hi!
I’m using it as a contact sheet so my clients can choose the photos from their events (birthdays, weddings…). This galleries that people can select are just the BEST for photographers! Thank you!

I’m thinking about making something independent from Lighroom based on those! =) It would be really interesting.

Bye!

Hey Matt and everyone—

I use the Simpleviewer in my portfolio galleries on my photography site, altered a bit in Adobe GoLive, and the client respnse gallery and xml auto-index for my customers’ online proofing and ordering. You totally saved my virtual life with these—I did my whole site myself and I know NOTHING about coding or Flash!

Hey everyone,

When it came time to redo my boss’s photography website we were so glad we found The Turning Gate, especially after having so many problems getting good results from the designers we had used in the past. Now we can do it ourselves and it looks great!

http://www.andreafremiotti.com/

The TTG LR Pages provided a great Homepage template and we used the TTG Panic Galleries for the photo collections. We had to do some tweaking, such as removing the Info panes from the Panic Galleries and getting everything to align properly and such. These were easy with Matt’s tips and help. Soon we hope to add an Auto-randomize feature to have the homepage serve up different images each time it loads. When it comes time to update the galleries with new fresh images, no problem, i can do it myself in minutes.

Thanks Matt!

Auto Index as a front end and sub-gallery manager
(also used on solo images to generate thumbnail directory for indexing)
XML Maker for taging index entries for each new gallery
LR Pages for static content

My site works that way I want it now. I create the galleries and upload them, the site self-updates the indexes with the new content – Great Stuff!

Thanks Matt.

Built the whole site thanks to Matthew templates (LR pages, shadowbox gallery, XML auto index) with some minor tweaks here and there.
Very clean and hassle free result, kudos to Matt.

Thanks Matthew (great name) for all the templates and the clarity of your site. I was looking at Mike Vernon’s work above and noted that he had multiple tiers for his categories of photos – something that I’m trying to create too. I shot him an email asking how he picks up thumbnails and album title and description data – by a hack or manually generated – and wondered if you had any comments on that?

You can see how I’ve set up my test site above – I get the links to the sub-galleries but obviously there is no other data being automatically generated. I’m probably missing something obvious?!

2 June 08 / permalink

Hi Matt (you’ve got a great name, too!),

All you need to do is fill out the XML Auto Index fields located in the Site Info pane of the Web module. All of my HTML-based galleries and album indexes include XML Auto Index support, including the index template itself (so that it can be read by a parent index, and thereby be used as a sub-category). The only things you need to include are an autoindex.xml file and a /thumbnails/ folder.

Cheers,
Matt

2 June 08 / permalink

Thanks Matt, I worked that one out (it was staring me in the face!) – I think I was trying to be too clever with the “auto” component in the sub-category, but of course it’s an index so needs to be named manually! That’s what happens when you’re doing it late at night!

Just curious, would you create the thumbnails folder for the sub-category index manually (or just reference a thumbnail from the galleries below?)

Now I’m going to have a look at your Flickr implementation and I’m set. You’ve done a great job linking all this stuff up – it’s exactly what I’ve been looking for from a work-flow point of view. It has been very clunky up until now. I’m inspired to go back through a lot of images and make some fun galleries. I’ll let you know when it’s happening!

2 June 08 / permalink

Hi Matt,

When creating the index, the template creates thumbnails for your preview. Usually, we’d delete the thumbnails folder, but if you’re going to be using it as a category, choose images to represent the category contents, then don’t delete them. The auto index will look for the thumbnails folder and select a thumbnail at random, unless you specify a thumbnail manually.

An alternative is to use TTG XML Maker w/ Thumbnails to produce a new autoindex.xml file and /thumbnails/ folder.

As for my Flickr implementation, I’m using the vdh_flickr plugin for Textpattern. Unless you site is built on Textpattern, it won’t do you much good. The thumbnails at the bottom of every page are generated using an unstyled Flickr badge, though. You can put that into any page.

Matthew – GREAT STUFF! (sorry for yelling, but it really is great).

I use TTG LR Pages, although I hacked it to provide SEO Metatdata tags, StatCounter stats, more lines in the footer, an extra optional page, left or right sided top menu, ability to choose blockquote style for paragraphs with a single quote and a myriad of additional styling choices. I also allowed for a fixed width of the site with another wrapper in the CSS. In the contact page I switched the code to phpMailer and set mine up for SMTP mailing – a limitation I had with keeping my own site.

I use AutoIndex which I also hacked with the same feel as the Pages template. Ditto to the Slimbox Gallery.

Hope you like it! http://www.outdoorimagesfineart.com

Thanks so much for all the galleries you’ve done. So far the shadow/slimbox are my favorites. I have used the monoslideshow and the older client response (though i’ve never really had any official clients). I’ve also tried out the password protection.

I’m a hobby photographer and enjoy taking pictures for friends and found your galleries a simple, well designed way of sharing my pictures.

I added your site to “my equipment” page. hope you don’t mind.

Slimbox 2.5.2. Quick and clean. To integrate into my new site I used PHP to strip out some lines and modify others server-side. I am much form familiar with PHP than I am with LUA or other aspects of the LR web gallery templates. By using PHP I can use / export the LR galleries “as is” and just tweak my PHP function when necessary for newer versions of the galleries.

Give it a look! http://digitaloxygen.ca/photography/commercial/

I am also working on a direct link system which is partially complete. I have the urls working I just have to update my PHP or possibly the slimbox files (which I have centrally located and are used by all the slimbox galleries on the site) to add the link to the image footers by the close link.

Here is a sample:

Hi,

I’m using auto album index for my two websites:

http://www.beckyholladay.com – main website
http://www.photobecky.com – wedding & event website

Thank you so much…I was pulling my hair out trying to make a new website in Dreamweaver. I used to use Flash and slideshow pro but it would take too long to make new galleries.

The only problem I have is that I have two websites, one for documentary work and one for weddings, events, and portraits. The second website, photobecky.com lives on the server www.beckyholladay.com. I have a link to my main website on photobecky.com, but once you get to the main website, the browser still says www.photobecky.com. Is there a way to turn off the feature that’s hiding the real location? It might be confusing to people who want to visit my main website again.

Thanks,

Becky

Hi Becky,

I’m glad you’re finding my templates useful. I think the domain issue is something you should take up with your hosting company. The behavior is strange, almost as if your pages are being loaded in frames – and yet, I see no frames. Seems to be issues with how they’ve configured the domain masking. Drop them an email and see what they have to say about it.

Cheers,
Matt
