Canon Gear for Sale

I’m paring down and very likely changing camera systems, which means I have gear to sell. I’d much rather deal with TTG users than strangers on eBay, and maybe that feeling goes two ways. So this is what I have and what I’m asking for it. See below for additional details on condition, transactions, etc.

If interested in items listed as ON HOLD, please send me a message. Held items are tentative, and if the transaction ultimately doesn’t happen, I’ll go to the next person in line.

Condition

I am very good to my gear. Everything is in excellent condition and working order. I have never abused my gear, nor subjected it to adverse weather conditions.

I only have the box for the 50mm lens, but otherwise have all accessories (hoods, bags, lenscaps, etc.) included with the gear when purchased. All of my gear was purchased new.

Shipping & Insurance

The prices above do not include shipping or insurance. We can discuss these costs when you contact me about the item. I may need to make a post office trip to get an accurate figure, as I really don’t want to rip people off on shipping as so often happens on eBay.

I will ship internationally.

Items will only ship after receipt of payment.

Returns

Should you receive an item and have legitimate concerns that the condition of the item is not as you expected, I will refund the purchase price after receiving the item back from you in the same condition in which it was sent. Returns must be made within one week of receiving your package.

You pay return shipping. Original shipping and insurance fees are nonrefundable.

Please only buy if you are serious about keeping the item, though. I’m not lending this stuff out so that you can try it before making a purchase decision.

Payment

You would be paying me directly, not The Turning Gate.

I will accept payments via direct wire to my bank account, or via PayPal.

Pricing

I feel the prices I am asking are fair to both parties. If anything, they are lower than I would like. In arriving at these prices, I first contacted B&H Photo and received quotes to sell the items to them, knowing they would lowball the values in the interest of reselling the items at retail. I then looked up their retail prices for new and used gear. My prices are higher than B&H would pay me for the gear, and lower than you would pay them to buy it used.

What else … ?

If you have questions or if you are interested in purchasing, contact me via email. If you consent to buy, I will hold the requested item for 24 hours while awaiting payment. After 24 hours without payment, I will accept the next offer.

Some items will come with unannounced bonuses, like included UV filters, etc. Hurray!

I think that’s all the important information … So just email me if there’s anything else you need to know.

    D4 purchase on the horizon?

    • Matt says:

I’m considering it. The price tag is hard to swallow, though, so I might even settle for a D3s.

      • Ben says:

This may not be a short answer but why the change?

        • Matt says:

So many reasons. Some of which are to do with travel. I will very likely be doing a few more years in South Korea beginning later this year, and Canon service in Korea runs through LG, not directly through Canon. International warranties are not honored in Korea, and it’s generally a mess. Whatever gear is not purchased through LG distribution channels cannot be serviced within Korea.

In general, I think Nikon’s gear is a bit more ruggedly built than Canon’s, which also makes it better suited to travel. Canon’s stuff is tough, no doubt, but I think Nikon has them beat in this department.

I’m getting more into using small flash, and I think Nikon has the better small flash system. Canon ETTL is … well, I use it and it works, but it never ceases to be strange to me.

I have too much stuff, especially if I plan to be overseas again. I can box it and let it sit for several years while away, or I can sell it off now. As long as I’m selling things, it’s a good time to make the change, which I’ve been mulling over for more than a year now.

I think Canon is obviously very interested in motion capture these days, more so than still capture. I’m not interested in motion, and I think Nikon’s direction is (arguably) more in line with the way that I use cameras now and into the future.

There are probably other reasons I could think of, but that’s what I’ve got off the top of my head.

You make so very good points here. I shoot Canon gear and really do love it for the most part, but you are dead on when you mention that Canon seems to be focusing on motion. It doesn’t mean Canon doesn’t make a great product but it feels very much to me like it did for Mac computers once the iphone came out. That line wasn’t the priority anymore. The product might be good but the support for it i personally think is awful. Canon’s EOS utility hasn’t worked with Mac OSX in quite a while and they don’t seem to care or have plans to fix it. Everyone has dropped support for the 5d I (lightroom, capture one, etc..) because Canon has basically dropped support for its own product by not updating the libraries, so now there is no tether function for lightroom or capture one users. I understand that the 5D line is 7 or 8 years old but it’s still only one generation behind and quite frankly I don’t want a 5DII that shoots video because then clients nag at you to shoot some “video for the website”. I agree with your decision, i wish I had the guts to do it right now. I also wish I had seen the ad for the 85mm 1.2 before it sold :) My favorite lens of all.

Same feeling and solved in the same way… I’m a Canon fan and addicted still now, but Nikon is moving in the same way I want…

            I completely agree with you…
I purchased a D700 and some lenses last month.. and now I’m in China for travel… :D

          • Matt says:

Very nice. I hope you’ll be sharing some images eventually.

    I wish I could “settle” for a D3s :)

Not to pry, but was curious as to what takes you to South Korea for a couple years? Work, play, both?

    • Matt says:

All of the above. I spent five years there previously, so I have friends there and I enjoy the place. There are always work opportunities there for native English speakers, and I enjoy teaching and working with kids. And I’m eyeing an MA program in TESOL at Sookmyung Women’s University, which would be a good and — because I’m a foreigner — inexpensive degree for me. Beyond that, South Korea was the last place that I truly enjoyed being a photographer. Since coming back, I have been educated in photography, have worked professionally in photography, and have lost my spark for the craft. I’m hoping to find it again. In a way, changing camera systems is one part of turning over a new photographic leaf.

Also I enjoy travel, and whilst in Asia I’m hoping to see more of the continent, using South Korea as a base. Still single, still unsettled, may as well use it to do interesting things. ;-)

      • Splattered says:

Thanks for sharing, sounds like good times are ahead for you.

BTW – I’m jealous! I’m married, have two boys who keep me busy and still have my passion for photography. Only problem is, I’m married have two boys and no time to work on my craft :)

        • Ben says:

Same boat here. Grass is always greener on the other side and depending on what mood I’m in and how exhausting or pleasant the kids have been dictates which side it feels like I’m standing on ;)

Hoping to make the shift to photography full time if/when my wife gets her Nursing degree.

      • Matt says:

Ha. You guys may envy my freedom, but I also envy what you have. I want the wife and kids; just hasn’t happened for me yet. With any luck, I’ll fall into it while doing the other stuff, and hopefully in that order: wife and then kids.

  3. Coen says:

You might be happy to see the D800E on the horizon now!

    • Matt says:

Read the press release when it hit last night. I’m a bit confused by the 36-megapixel sensor. Why on earth would they make such a thing … ???

      • Ben says:

Yeah, that seems a little crazy. I can see the appeal for certain types of photographers but it definitely seems like overkill. I can’t imagine working with those 70 MB+ RAW / 200 MB+ TIFFs. Sheesh.

        • Coen says:

True, seems crazy. But you don’t have to use all those pixels…. And I could do without the video stuff. But the fact that is is smaller than the D700 is fascinating to me. You don’t know what the future holds in store. I mean I wasn’t shooting at max pixels with my first Sony 515 [at first].

  4. Jan Verbeke says:

I have the new 5DIII for a few days now and the difference is amazing compared to the 5DII : Very nice ISO (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jebeke/7024507569/in/photostream) performance and very nice new AF mechanism !!!
The 1DX is even taking this brilliant experience a bit further !! I don’t have it at home yet, but I could do some testing a few weeks back on a Canon demo day.
